1860 Mora Census, Territory of New Mexico

During this period, the Mora Valley saw quite an increase in trade mostly due to the Santa Fe Trail commerce. Freighters, blacksmiths, merchants and local people all played roles in this growing time of New Mexico. Many of these entrepreneurs were from outside the New Mexico Territory, some even came from Europe. Other than farmers or farm laborers, the census enumerated other occupations that helped to maintain "business as ususal." As you will note the majority are of non-hispanic origin. Many of these men married local women as they did not bring wives with them.  Some historians believe that if shehad a dowry, helped their financial status immediately, others don't think this is the case in all situations. Others may have just been passing through or associated with Fort Union.
